Understand what needs replacing
A quote should distinguish a complete ceiling replacement from an isolated section. Photos of the whole room and the affected area help start the conversation, but hidden framing and the cause of damage may need an inspection before a replacement scope can be confirmed.
Compare the complete scope
Ask about protection, removal, disposal, new sheets, setting and the junction with existing walls. Cornice removal or replacement can change the work at the perimeter. Lights, fans and other ceiling services may also need separate trade coordination rather than being assumed part of plastering.
Plan around living in the home
Mention bedrooms, kitchens or passages that need to remain accessible. Furniture, floor coverings and dust control need a practical plan before removal begins. Confirm how the room will be left between visits and when painting can follow the agreed plasterboard finish.

Can a stained ceiling simply be replaced?
The reason for the staining needs to be understood and any ongoing water entry resolved before new lining is agreed. Mention earlier repairs and whether the area is currently dry.
Will the existing cornice be kept?
Sometimes it can be retained, but condition and the removal method affect this. Ask the contractor to identify any cornice work in the quote.
